Bradley Wiggins vince la prima tappa del Giro d'Italia. L'inglese si aggiudica la prima frazione dell'edizione numero 93 della corsa rosa vincendo la cronometro inaugurale. Ad Amsterdam, prima delle tre tappe olandesi della prima grande corsa a tappe della stagione, l'inglese, ex dominatore delle corse su pista, si mette dietro la sorpresa Brent Bookwalter, statunitense, e il campione del mondo, nonchè uno dei favoriti per la maglia rosa, Cadel Evans che, a sua volta, fa già paura al resto della carovana per l'ottimo stato di forma dimostrato. Quarto posto per il redivivo Alexandre Vinokurov, anch'egli con l'obiettivo dichiarato della vittoria finale. Per quel che riguarda gli italiani troviamo Marco Pinotti che si piazza decimo seguito da Vincenzo Nibali il quale come sappiamo è al Giro per la sospensione cautelare di Franco Pellizzotti. Ivan Basso, che dovrebbe essere l'uomo di classifica della Liquigas, accusa un ritardo di 23'' dal vincitore Wiggins e 21'' da Evans.
